Plenty of manufacturers call it filled for life, but that assumes a life shorter than most cars around here actually get. Gear oil shears and degrades, and on a high-mileage manual box a fresh fill of the correct specification often improves a notchy or crunchy change noticeably. On automatics it matters even more, because the oil is doing hydraulic work as well as lubricating.

Usually a worn synchromesh on that gear, and second is typically first to go because of how often it is used from cold. It can also be a clutch not fully releasing, or simply the wrong or badly degraded oil in the box. Those are very different repairs, so it is worth diagnosing properly rather than assuming the worst.

A whine or hum that changes with road speed, and often changes character between accelerating and coasting, usually points at wear in the crown wheel and pinion or a failing bearing. Caught early it can sometimes be addressed with an oil change and a bearing; left long enough it becomes a rebuild or an exchange unit.

It depends on the fault. Solenoid faults, sensor faults, oil and filter problems and linkage issues are all repairable on the car. Internal mechanical damage to the clutch packs or torque converter generally means an exchange unit, and we'll be straight with you about which side of that line your car falls on.

Sometimes it plainly isn't, and we'd rather say so. We'll give you the honest cost of the repair against what the car is worth, and if the sensible answer is to change the car rather than the gearbox, we'll tell you — we sell cars as well as fix them, and we'd rather keep you as a customer than sell you a repair you regret.
