Car Batteries in Pontefract, West Yorkshire

A battery rarely gives much notice before it leaves you stranded on a cold morning. We'll test yours properly at RDA Car Sales in Upton, Pontefract — and check the alternator, because a flat battery isn't always the battery's fault.

Battery Testing and Replacement in Pontefract

Batteries fail in winter, but the damage is usually done in summer. Heat degrades the plates, and the loss only becomes obvious when cold weather thickens the engine oil and demands far more cranking current than a mild morning does. That is why the first hard frost around Pontefract produces a run of cars that were starting perfectly well in October.

The other thing worth knowing is that a flat battery is a symptom, not always a diagnosis. It can be a failing alternator, a parasitic drain from something not switching off properly, or corroded terminals adding resistance. We test the battery under load, check the charging system, and look for a drain before selling you a battery — because a new one fitted to a car with an alternator fault will be flat again inside a week.

The Benefits

Tested Under Load

A resting voltage reading tells you little. We test the battery doing the job it actually has to do.

Charging System Checked

Alternator output and parasitic drain checked too, so you're not back with a second flat battery.

AGM and EFB Fitted

Stop-start cars need the right battery type and, on many, coding to the car. We do both.

Usually Same Day

Common sizes are quick to get hold of locally, so most batteries can be tested and fitted the same day.

What's Typically Included

A battery job with us is a test before it is a sale. Here's what we cover.

Battery condition and cranking test under load
Alternator charging output test
Parasitic drain test where the battery is going flat while parked
Terminal, clamp and earth strap inspection and cleaning
New battery supplied to the correct size, capacity and terminal layout
AGM and EFB batteries for stop-start vehicles
Battery registration or coding to the car where required
Old battery taken away and recycled

Know The Signs

Signs your battery is going

The engine turns over slowly, especially first thing on a cold morning
Headlights dim noticeably at idle, or the dash flickers on cranking
Stop-start has quietly stopped working
The car has needed a jump start, or goes flat if it sits for a few days

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a car battery last?

Typically three to five years, though short journeys shorten that considerably because the battery never fully recharges between trips. A car used for a couple of miles at a time around town will get through batteries faster than one doing regular longer runs, regardless of age.

Why does my battery keep going flat?

If a new or healthy battery keeps going flat, the battery usually isn't the problem. The common causes are an alternator not charging properly, or a parasitic drain — something staying awake after you lock the car, such as a faulty module, an aftermarket alarm or a dashcam wired in permanently. We test for both rather than simply selling you another battery.

Does a stop-start car need a special battery?

Yes. Stop-start systems need an AGM or EFB battery designed for the constant cycling, and fitting a standard battery instead will see it fail early and often disables stop-start altogether. Many cars also need the new battery registered to the charging system so it charges correctly, which we take care of.

Can you test my battery without replacing it?

Of course, and we'd rather do that first. A proper load test tells you whether the battery still has the cranking power it should, or whether the problem lies with the charging system. If yours is fine we'll say so — plenty of cars we test go away without a new battery.

Will I lose my radio code or settings?

On most modern cars we maintain power to the vehicle while the battery is swapped, so settings, codes and stored data are retained. Where that isn't possible we'll tell you beforehand what you may need to reset.
