What does it mean when an exhaust is blowing?
It means gas is escaping before it reaches the tailpipe, usually through a hole rusted in a box or a split at a joint or weld. Besides the noise, a leak ahead of the oxygen sensor can upset the fuelling and put the engine management light on, and a leak further forward can let fumes into the cabin.
Can you replace just one section rather than the whole exhaust?
Yes, wherever the rest of the system is sound, and that is what we'll do by default. Most modern exhausts are built in sections precisely so they can be replaced individually. We'll only recommend more than one section when the corrosion genuinely runs beyond the part that has failed.
Will a blowing exhaust fail the MOT?
Yes. An exhaust with a leak, or one that is noticeably louder than the manufacturer intended, is an MOT failure — and an emissions reading pushed out of range by a leak will fail it too. It is a cheap thing to sort before a test compared with a retest and a second visit.
Why has my catalytic converter failed?
Cats rarely fail on their own. Usually something upstream has damaged them — a misfire dumping unburnt fuel into the cat, burning oil, or a coolant leak into the combustion chamber. Fitting a new cat without finding that cause simply destroys the new one, so we diagnose the reason first.
